Artist statement in English

 

 

Within the way I view the world, reality and objects are created through sensations which through much introspection, new imagery is expressed as it becomes alive again on the screen and canvas. The target then questions reality and itself inside this space, but to me rather than showing a tangible reality, these perceptions are created metaphorically inside.

 

Externally, the shapes and forms we encounter represent the beginning, end, desire, emotions, nature, and life. You, me, us- all connections such as the art we draw with words, is what I try to reflect in my paintings.

 

The objects are created by repeated movement of hands on the canvas, which adds a density and depth on the plane’s surface. As the paints are processed, the objects with which my emotions are involved create an almost rudimentary atmosphere which does not exist in reality but expresses the most truthful moment within myself.

 

For me, the act of paintings is a complicated, metaphoric, and exquisite narrative of the world and the existence behind it.

 

Rather than express my thoughts and viewpoints directly, I choose to show how I am aware of reality despite the fictitious scenario I create.

Artist statement in korean

 

 

내가 바라보는 세상과 그 속에 존재하는 대상들은 감각에 의해 인식되는 외부적인 형태이고 이러한 과정에서 발생하는 정신적인 의문과 고민은 작가의 내면에서 새로운 형상으로 발현되고, 그것들은 마치 살아있는 유기체와 같이 화면에서 다시 살아난다.

 

대상들의 존재에 대한 의문들은 현실이라는 공간 안에 실재하지만 내가 구성하는 공간은 현실에서 정의되지 않는 비현실의 장소에서 은유적으로 만들어진다.

 

외부적 형상들과의 만남, 연결, 만남의 종결, 끝나버림에서 다시 시작, 공간, 욕망, 마음, 살아있음, 유기적 생명체, 나, 우리, 관계 이러한 단어들은 그림 속에 맴도는 메아리와 같다.

 

반복해서 그리는 행위를 통해 대상은 평면 위에서 그 자체의 깊이와 밀도를 갖게 되다. 그림이 그려질수록 감정 이입된 대상들이 화면 안에 생경한 분위기를 만들어내고 그렇게 만들어진 화면은 어디에도 존재하지 않지만 나에게 가장 진실한 순간을 드러낸다.

 

대상 자체에 대한 설명이나 견해를 말하기 보다는 오히려 그렇게 그리는 나의 행위들이 내가 나의 현실을 어떻게 인식하고 만들어 내는지를 정의되지 않은 공간 안에서 보여주는 것이다.
